Haverstock School art educational programme x Spatial Values,
Oct 2023- Feb 2024
The Spatial Values educational programme with Haverstock School x Koko curated and facilitated by Brenna Horrox introduced students to unique experimental practitioners active in their scenes over 3 months of hands-on workshops, culminating in a powerful performance at Koko by the students. Each artist introduced their practice, we then created art with their concepts and practices in mind. Performance art was the encompassing thematic - within this we explored movement, costume, sets, story telling and alternative histories. We looked outside the artworld for inspiration and instead to protests, cultural rituals and street culture. The sessions all used non-traditional methods and materials, often stemming from different cultural histories as way to question how the western art canon often disregarded these practices. We wanted to show how the students memories, experiences and ideas that make up who they are, are valuable to explore creatively and criticaly in art and the worlds they want to create.
By the end of the project each student developed a final performance that they performed at Koko. We took over a room in Koko and installed the collaboratively made set; the names of the students were spray painted onto canvas installed around the room. Each student created videos, costumes, disruptions, plays and choreographed this all together to create a moment of insight into their lives for the audience to enter. The power of art was palpable as each student took the opportunity to produce something raw, vulnerable and inspiring. The students told their stories, critiqued social hierarchies and provoked assumptions that generalise young people today.
